Let’s talk about dementia

‘Let’s talk about dementia’ was the theme for September’s World Alzheimer’s Day and is something that home care provider Right at Home GF actively encourages people to do.

From information videos and training to community support groups, Right at Home has a range of resources to help get people talking and to increase understanding and awareness about dementia.

Research shows that more than 850,000 people in the UK have dementia and that between 50 and 75% of these people have Alzheimer’s Disease, which is a physical disease that affects the brain.

Home care provider Right at Home GF specialise in dementia care and help many people to live independently at home.

Alastair Shanks, Managing Director at Right at Home GF says: “Sadly, there are still a number of misconceptions around the outcomes for somebody who has been diagnosed with dementia including the myth that residential care is inevitable. Thankfully, as our understanding of the condition has increased, there is more evidence that quality care at home can have a real impact on stabilising and even slowing the progression of the most common dementia symptoms.

“Familiarity, regular routines, and cognitive stimulation have all been shown to have a positive impact, which is why we run community groups such as Singing for the Mind and Love to Move. For the time being, the groups are taking place virtually, but they still offer a great deal of support and information for people living with dementia and their carers.”

Right at Home is also keen to encourage conversations about dementia with businesses and voluntary organisations. Alastair Shanks provides Dementia Friends Training for anybody who wants to increase their knowledge about the condition. The training offers practical steps you can take to help people with dementia to continue living in the community in the way they want.
