Funding & Planning

We understand that choosing care can be difficult, that’s why we try and support you to make the process as simple as possible. Right at Home can provide you with the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about homecare.

When you make contact with us, you will be provided with an approximate quote before undertaking a homecare assessment to confirm the level and type of care required.

Our care packages can be tailored to meet your needs, however, we always recommend that our care calls are a minimum of one hour to ensure the quality of our care is the highest level for you or your family member.

If you are arranging care for yourself or a loved one over the age of 18, you may be entitled to additional financial support. If you have questions about the cost of homecare you can contact us today.

Attendance Allowance

Those aged 65 or over who need help with personal care, due to physical or mental disability, can apply to receive Attendance Allowance. This is a tax-free Government benefit which is not means-tested.

  • The basic rate of Attendance Allowance (£58.70 a week) is given to over 65s who need frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
  • A higher rate of Attendance Allowance (£87.65 a week) is available to over 65s who need help and supervision throughout both the day and the night, or are living with a terminal illness.

People aged under 65 may be eligible for Personal Independence Payments instead. These payments range from £23.20 to £148.85 a week.

Follow this link to find out more or visit www.direct.gov.uk and search for Attendance Allowance.

Carers Allowance

If you are 16 or over and spend more than 35 hours a week caring for someone with disabilities, you may be eligible to receive Carer’s Allowance (£66.15 a week).

This taxable benefit is not available to people who are in full-time education, receive certain other benefits, or earn more than £123.00 a week after certain deductions.

Visit www.direct.gov.uk and search for Carer’s Allowance for more information.

Social Services Funding

Social Services Funding comes into effect if the person needing care has less than £23,250 in savings.

If this is the case, the first step is to ask your local Adult Social Services department to arrange a Community Care Assessment. If the person in question is deemed eligible to receive council-supported care services, the local authority will decide a budget based upon their care needs.

The maximum hourly rate for homecare services varies from one authority to another. It is unlikely to cover the full hourly cost of a quality homecare service, such as Right at Home. However, as a result of a Government initiative to give individuals greater choice, you are now able to take control of your budget by having it paid into your bank account and topping-up the hourly cost of receiving care from an agency of your choice. This route is called Direct Payments and is designed to allow people greater control and choice over the care services they receive. To find out more about Direct Payments follow this link or visit www.nhs.uk/CarersDirect.

How do savings affect charges?

A person with savings over £23,250 will not receive any financial help. For a person with savings between £14,250 and £23,250, £1 income for every £250 between these amounts is assumed. Mortgage, rent, savings and expenses due to disability etc. are all taken into consideration and the amount left is their ‘available income’ and the person can be asked to contribute 65% of this towards the cost of their care.

Personal health budgets

Personal health budgets are funded by the NHS and can be used to implement a care and support plan that is agreed between the individual and their local NHS teams. They are an optional way of achieving your health and wellbeing goals, giving you greater control over decision-making.

Once a care and support plan has been agreed, the individual can either manage their budget themselves or they can opt for the NHS team or a third party to manage it for them. If managing their own budget, they will receive Direct Payments to spend on healthcare services they have chosen and arranged themselves. Alternatively, the NHS team or a third party will support them to identify the services they need, then arrange and pay for them on their behalf.

Personal health budgets are fully funded by the NHS and cannot be ‘topped up’. To find out more follow this link.

NHS Continuing Care Funding

If you have a complex medical problem or needs that result from disability, accident or illness, you might qualify for free NHS Continuing Care.

This tends to be given to people who need nursing care rather than social care. It can cover healthcare costs, personal care, accommodation or support for carers if you are being looked after at home.

To find out if you are eligible for free NHS Continuing Care, you must first undergo initial screening, then a more thorough assessment that is carried out by a team of two or more health and social care professionals who are involved in your care. If your health is deteriorating rapidly, you can ask about a fast-track assessment to bypass the initial screening.

If you don’t qualify for NHS support at the first assessment and your circumstances change, you can request a review through your GP or social worker. You may still qualify for Local Authority funding for some of your care needs.

If you have questions about the cost of homecare you can contact us today and we can guide you if you are unsure of the options available.

Newport is thrilled to announce it has been shortlisted for the Excellence in Community Relations Award for a third consecutive year at the South Wales Chamber of Commerce Welsh Business Awards.

The annual awards aim to recognise the very best achievements from businesses of all sizes across Wales who are playing a fundamental role in driving the Welsh economy forward. These awards will celebrate success, excellence in best practice and the contribution Welsh businesses are making to the wider community.

Right at Home Cardiff & Newport provides high quality care and support to people living in their own homes. It currently supports more than 225 Clients and employs a team of 170 trusted CareGivers. As well as services such as home help and personal care, the care provider supports Clients to get out and about in the community and pursue activities and hobbies, matching Clients to CareGivers with similar interests.

The team has been recognised for its commitment and dedication to the local community and going the extra mile to be inclusive and all-encompassing to their Clients and CareGivers alike. Examples of this commitment include a calendar of CareGiver and family events over the course of the year such as the annual Easter Party, Christmas Party for families and charity fundraising Summer events. The office also: produces and distributes regular and informative newsletters for Clients and CareGivers; shares Monthly Magic Moments to showcase the work done in the community and recognising CareGiver development and their achievements; and holds annual CareGiver awards to recognise outstanding practice.

This year the office also distributed Christmas lunches, gift bags and treats to those Clients who do not have anyone and without the CareGivers and office support, would otherwise have a lonely time over the festive season.

These are just a few illustrations of how the team work together towards a common goal – making a difference every day and not just talking about the Right at Home ethos but truly walking the walk with shared values in everything they do every day of the year.

Joe Guishard, Managing Director and Owner of Right at Home Cardiff & Newport said: “We are absolutely committed to making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable adults and the elderly living in our local communities. These awards give us the opportunity to shine a spotlight on our fantastic team of CareGivers and celebrate their hard work and dedication to providing the highest quality care and support to our Clients.”

Winners will be announced at a Black Tie Gala Dinner hosted by TV presenter Gethin Jones on Thursday 21st February 2019 in the prestigious setting of City Hall in Cardiff.

Tips for keeping our elderly community safe this winter

Tips for keeping our elderly community safe this winter

Winter is here, and with it is the increased likelihood of freezing temperatures and wintery conditions. But there are simple things we can all do to be good neighbours and CareGivers to help keep loved ones warm, safe and comfortable. After talking to our CareGivers, we have compiled our top five tips to help us all be more prepared this winter season.

Getting older can leave us more vulnerable in the colder months as our bodies respond differently to different temperatures. When we start to feel cold, this usually triggers us to do something to warm up: from adding more layers or turning up the heating. If our body temperature drops below 37C, dangerous problems like increased heart rate and blood pressure, liver damage and heart attack, can arise. Hypothermia can set in if our temperature drops below 35C. Left untreated, hypothermia shuts down the body’s heart and respiratory systems – one of the leading causes of excess winter death.

As homecare specialists, we often see our Clients making decisions during the winter months which can have an adverse impact on their health and wellbeing. This includes turning the heating down, or off, to save money; not wearing the right clothing for the weather; or being unaware of the temperature drop outside.

We also have a number of Clients living with Dementia and Alzheimer’s, which presents its own challenges in the winter, such as forgetting how to operate the heating, or fire, or placing something too close to a fire so it becomes a risk, or they leave the house, not properly wrapped up against the cold.

At Right at Home, as professional CareGivers we are alert to the senior members of our community. But as friendly neighbours, we also care about those living around us. Based on our experiences, we would like to share five tips to help us all be aware of people in our community, who may need a little extra support this winter.

1. If you have senior members in your family or friendship circle, create a rota of people who can regularly call in to check your loved one is warm and safe. Check they have the appropriate clothing. Check the cupboards are stocked with the right kind of food. Check the temperature of the room.

2. Pop in on your neighbours and loved ones for a quick “hello”. As well as alleviating their loneliness, it allows you to check the temperature of a room, and to ensure there is no fire-hazard on or near the appliances. It is also worth investing in a carbon monoxide alarm, especially if you notice the heater may be quite old.

3. If you have a good relationship with seniors around you, and they are comfortable with you in their homes, why not offer to insulate any drafty windows. Adding strips of sealing tape or foam around the edges, or a sticky-backed film (even bubble wrap) onto the window can help to keep the warmth in, and the cold out.

4. When you’re out and about, try to observe the people around you, are the elderly people you pass adequately dressed for the weather? A friendly conversation can give you an idea if the person has forgotten to put a coat on, or if there is an underlying issue. When you shake their hand, do they have gloves? We’re not saying you have to buy everyone a pair of gloves, but you may encounter a situation needing a little extra care, and a trip to the charity shop.

5. When the paths are icy or covered in snow, offering a little support can bring confidence to someone who is struggling to safely navigate the pathways. If someone falls, keep them warm as you call for help; don’t try to help them up, in case they have broken a bone. When they are at home, an unchecked break can be limiting and lead to a more serious problem if not seen to, so ensure to get it checked out.

Being aware of our seniors doesn’t need to be a costly effort, but it does require a little time and vigilance. By working together, we can help to keep our community safe this winter.

Call Me Back

“What an excellent company, would highly recommend! Right at Home cared for my mother before she sadly passed away, she was treated with dignity and respect throughout the whole process. Each member of care staff showed love and care to not only her but the whole family! The management team also supported us through such a difficult time, ensuring we were kept informed at every step of the way and were on hand day and night if we required any further assistance or visits. We could not have got through this without them.”

Right at Home National Franchise Award 2019

Right at Home National Franchise Award 2019

Awards

Leading UK homecare company Right at Home has been named Best Franchise in the Management category at the 2018 Best Franchise Awards which took place on Tuesday 4th December.

Right at Home’s UK operation is owned by CEO Ken Deary and its National Office is based in Waterloo. The company provides high quality homecare to Clients in the comfort of their own homes and is the most highly rated national homecare agency on the UK’s leading independent review site homecare.co.uk with a 9.8/10 rating.

Right at Home began franchising in the UK in 2011, when Ken (himself an award-winning franchisee when he franchised with McDonalds) discovered the brand in the USA and adapted it for the UK market. It has quickly established itself as one of the best management franchises and in June 2018, it opened its 50th office.

The Best Franchise Awards are based on the results of nationwide research conducted by franchise consultancy, WorkBuzz and the views of independent judges on the present and future prospects of the business. WorkBuzz compiles anonymous feedback from thousands of franchisees who rate qualities such as initial training, ongoing support, relationship with their franchisor and whether they would recommend their franchise to a prospective business owner. Top performing businesses are awarded 5-star franchisee satisfaction status and qualify for the award finals.

Right at Home faced tough competition from numerous household names but was once again named Best Franchise for a third year running and also retained its 5-star franchisee satisfaction status for a sixth consecutive year.

Commenting on their success, Ken Deary, Right at Home CEO said; “We are absolutely delighted that the support provided to our franchisees has been recognised with this award. To have retained the Best Franchise Award for a third year, and 5-star satisfaction for a sixth year, is especially important to us in our pursuit of excellence.”
