Parkinson’s Success Story – Changing Lives for the better
Parkinson’s Awareness Week aims to raise awareness about this potentially devastating condition. We wanted to share a story on one of our wonderful Clients who lives with Parkinson’s Disease.
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition, Parkinson’s Disease affects actions including talking, walking and writing. Parkinson’s Disease is named after a London doctor, Dr James Parkinson (1755-1824) who identified Parkinson’s Disease as a condition in its own right.
What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease?
Motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease include tremor, slowness of movement and stiffness or rigidity of muscles. Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease may also be experienced. These include depression and sleep disturbances. There are often differences in severity and the type of symptoms displayed between individuals.
Collette, 72 of Elstree, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in June 2020, this Client was bed bound, unable to lift her head off the pillow for over 6 months due to the debilitating illness. Prior to her diagnosis she was sociable and would regularly get out and about in the community and her illness led to her no longer being able to do this.
Right at Home Borehamwood & Watford started providing care for this lady in January 2021. The team worked closely with a team of local Physiotherapists to come up with a step-by-step plan to get her mobile and to regain her independence.
Her small, dedicated team of CareGivers encouraged her to believe in her ability to move her body and to weight bear. This was done in small, gradual steps over a matter of weeks, beginning with lifting her head off the pillow, sitting up in bed, to standing, then taking two to three small steps assisted. Some days are easier than others, but the change has been incredible. Over time, this lady has gone from being almost unable to move, to walking up the stairs in the space of three short months.
The change in her ability is astounding – this week she was dancing in the Right at Home office with a treasured CareGiver. She is now able to walk with a frame!
We hope this story holds a lot of hope for elderly or less mobile people during this pandemic and uncertain times. This lady is an inspiration and is so positive despite her ongoing illness.
