What can a CareGiver do?

CareGivers are amazing people, who provide exceptional support to local adults requiring care in their own home. They literally change lives every day & you likely see them on a daily basis, whether they are supporting your neighbour, passing you at the garage or supporting a client to do their weekly shop.

In this article, we was to show you what a homecare CareGiver may support clients with in a typical day:

Trips out- You may go on shopping trips, out for coffee, or to an event. These trips can be great fun for you and a client, breaking the ordinary routine and getting out of the house.

Companionship- Some clients may want you with them just for a chat to help them improve their mental health and wellbeing. This could be over a coffee out in the community, or at a client’s home.

Housework- You may need to help with general household tasks such as washing up, laundry and hoovering. Keeping a client’s house tidy and clean prevents hazards and potential illnesses.

Personal care- As a CareGiver, you’re likely to need to assist with personal care for your clients. This could include, showering, changing clothes, and using the toilet. It’s important to help clients keep good hygiene so they can live comfortably.

Medication support- You may be required to help with a client’s medication. Some clients may be unable to do it themselves or may easily forget. This means that you should be trained in administering and prompting medication, being aware of side effects, and knowing the correct timings for a client.

Meal preparation- Providing clients with nutritious meals that suit their dietary needs and food preferences is important to maintain their health and happiness.

Mobility assistance- Many clients have differing levels of mobility. You could be supporting a client with a short walk to a bathroom or using a hoist to move them from a bed to a wheelchair. You should be provided with the correct training in order to help a client move safely.

Keeping active- Even a small amount of exercise can be beneficial to a client. Something as simple as a walk around the house can help. Based on different client needs, you’ll do different activities. Fitness can also improve the wellbeing of a client, so it is important to keep active for many aspects of their health.
