Getting the right care for yourself or a family member can be a daunting prospect. It’s often something you don’t think about until you really must, so when you do start doing your research you can feel under pressure. The decision you make on care is vital though, so it is worth thinking through the pros and cons.

So, what is live-in care? Well, it’s exactly that – you invite a carer to live in your own home to help you maintain your independence. It is a cost-effective alternative to a care home, with one on one support. Many families tell us that knowing someone is at home with their loved one gives them peace of mind. The live-in carer will be on hand if you need them. They can assist with household tasks, such as washing, cleaning and cooking your meals. Live-in carers will assist with personal care, getting dressed and mobility support where it is needed. If you are able to get out and about then your live-in carer can accompany you wherever you want to go.

What are the cons? Live-in care is not for everybody. Your live-in carer will need their own room and some time off on a regular basis. As with many care options, it can expensive, especially if you need another carer to call in when your live-in carer takes a break. You may not like the idea of someone new living in your home – although in most cases a strong bond develops between the live-in carer and those they are looking after.

And the pros? There are many advantages with live-in care. Having the option to remain at home in familiar surroundings, with family, friends and social activities nearby is, for most people, preferable to moving to a residential care home. Staying at home means you avoid the upheaval of moving a– no matter what age you are, moving house is stressful. Other benefits include having a bespoke care plan, one on one support available 24/7, so your wants and needs can be met more easily.

In a residential care home you’ll have to fit in with other people’s rules (visiting times, few options for meals, limited activities..). You’ll also be able to keep your pets and you’ll be able to maintain your routines. Live-in care can also be cost effective for an individual or a couple as you’ll be paying double in residential care, whereas the incremental costs of supporting two people with live-in care is usually much less.
