Choosing Private Care instead of Council Care, using Direct Payments

Arranging care and knowing your entitlements to care costs can seem like a minefield. At Right at Home East Lancashire we often find that people are unaware that if your local council’s social services department decide that you are entitled to help with paying for care, that you may choose your own private care and pay for this using a direct payment from the council, instead of just allowing the council to allocate a company that you would not have chosen yourself.

A combination of an individual’s financial means and care needs will be assessed by your local council to see whether they are entitled to any local authority funding. If the council decides your loved one is eligible for assistance, they are then entitled to choose between council provided care or “direct payments”- which means the funding can be taken and used towards paying a home carer of your own choice. Your local council may take it for granted that you will want them to arrange a provider for them and many people do not realise they also have the option to choose the direct payment instead, to use towards their own selected care provider, allowing greater control and flexibility. This can also help ensure continuity of care and provides the freedom to choose people that you can personally relate to and the times that best meet your needs.

If you or a loved one can get help from social services you can apply for direct payments below.
