A tombola raised funds for East Lancs Hospice at an event held by The Patients’ Group of Blackburn’s Brownhill Surgery entitled “ALL ABOUT CANCER”.

Dr Tom Phillips, a GP from the surgery, gave a presentation on the different types of cancer and the vital signs and symptoms to look out for. Following this the Chair of the group, Right at Home (East Lancashire) owner Julie Foote, introduced the main speaker Doctor Mike Kirby, a radiography expert who was instrumental in setting up the Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston. Dr Kirby, who is also a curate at Blackburn Cathedral, gave a fascinating talk explaining the latest treatments. A brief information session explaining the role of the Hospice was followed by a lively Question and Answer session.

Julie commented “Following the success of last year’s event about dementia, we decided that since cancer touches so many people it would be an excellent topic for this year and it was great to raise money for the Hospice at the same time.”

After a break for refreshments visitors had the opportunity and to look around the stalls providing helpful information from Age UK, Right at Home, East Lancs Hospice, Health and Wellbeing and Blackburn with Darwen Carers Service.
