7 Tips to Age Gracefully

Published: 10/11/2023

Ageing is a natural and inevitable part of life, and how we navigate this journey can greatly impact our quality of life. It's essential to approach ageing with a positive mindset, and part of that involves making the right choices to ensure a comfortable and dignified life as we grow older. Here are 7 tips from our Care Manager Tracie to help you age well.

1.Take Time to Learn New Things

The older we get, the fewer chances we have to absorb new information; many of us are far out of school or work. The opportunities to learn are limited if those opportunities aren’t sought out.

2. Be Honest about Your Needs

“So often, people don’t age well because they’re not upfront about what their needs are,” said Robyn Golden. “How do we make it OK for people to say, ‘This is what I need, I’m feeling lonely, I need someone to go out with on a Thursday night.’”

3.Have a Community

Loneliness and isolation are a big problem. As you know, with the COVID pandemic, this has become really important. There was a lot of social isolation among our geriatric patients because they were confined to their homes.

4.Prioritise Your Physical Health

Eating nutritious foods and exercising are important all throughout your life, including when you reach an older age. Drink Water/liquid 2.5 litres a day. Staying physically active is also essential for ageing gracefully. Homecare services can offer support with exercises and mobility, ensuring that seniors can continue to enjoy an active lifestyle safely.

5. Do Things You Enjoy

Maintaining mental and emotional health is just as crucial as physical health. Seniors may experience feelings of isolation or depression, especially if they live alone. Right at Home provides companionship and emotional support, helping seniors stay connected to their community and loved ones.

6. Talk to Your Doctor about the Medications You Take

Just because you were prescribed one medication in your 50s doesn’t mean it’s still serving you 20, 30 or 40 years later. Many seniors take multiple medications, and proper medication management is crucial to their well-being. Homecare services can help seniors take their medications on time and in the correct dosage, reducing the risk of complications and hospitalisations.

7. Plan for the Future

The other thing I always tell people is to plan ahead because as much as we all want to age well into our hundreds, healthy and happily, there is a very good chance that something might happen that you need to be hospitalised, or that you might need more support in your home.
