How long does it take to recover from coronavirus?

Following the infection of  COVID 19, most people will feel better after a few weeks and make a full recovery within 3 months.  The term used when symptoms last longer than three months is Long COVID or Post COVID Syndrome.

Can I catch the COVID 19 Virus again?

It is very unlikely, but occasionally people have contracted the virus again. Many of the population have recovered from the virus or have received vaccinations lessening the risk.

What is Long COVID?

Long COVID or Post-COVID Syndrome are terms to describe the effects of COVID 19 which continue weeks or months beyond the initial infection.  The Institute for Health and Care Excellence, (NICE), defines long COVID as lasting more than 12 weeks.

What are the symptoms of Long COVID?

Long COVID symptoms vary between individuals.  Identifiable symptoms of Long COVID can include:

  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Heart palpitations
  • Stomach aches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Extreme tiredness
  • A high temperature
  • Problems with memory
  • Changes to the sense of smell/taste

Long COVID or Post-COVID Syndrome can leave you feeling extremely tired and forgetful, rather like your body has ‘locked down’ too. The effects of Long COVID  are still being understood,  often with doctors and their patients learning in tandem. Currently, there is no definitive list of symptoms, which can leave you feeling hopeless and frustrated. Living with Long COVID, or continuing symptoms of COVID-19 can feel frightening and isolating. Many of us need extra practical and emotional support with our day-to-day activities.

How can I support someone with Long COVID?

The support you or your loved one’s need with Long COVID will vary according to the severity and frequency of symptoms. However, even small gestures can make a big difference to how we feel. Everyday support may include:

  • Listening and validating symptoms to support self-esteem.
  • Undertaking activities at a slower pace.
  • Taking gentle exercise in the outdoors to improve mood and physical strength.
  • Ensuring eating healthily to bolster immunity.
