History of Rochester


The City of Rochester has grown from a little Saxon village to one of England’s finest cities.  The Romans came over and made Rochester one of their most important towns by building a stronghold and a bridge over the river Medway. Rochester in Kent is a very popular tourist attraction boasting the history of Dickens, Rochester Castle and the Cathedral. Below are events which draw tourist from all over the world.

The Sweeps Festival in Rochester is one of the largest celebrations of folk music and dance returns for the Early May Bank Holiday. The festival often draws in hundreds of Morris dancers, folk bands and street performers, as well as a funfair and market at Rochester Castle.

Twice a year, Dickens enthusiasts, strolling players, re-enactors, Dickensian 'characters' join the public in a Festival to commemorate and celebrate the life of Charles Dickens.

For book enthusiasts, Baggins Book Bazaar (the UK’s largest used bookstore) was established in the Historic City of Rochester in 1986 by the late Paul Minet, a former president of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association (ABA).
