Herne Hill Local History and Places to Visit

Prior to the arrival of the railways in 1862 and subsequent suburban expansion of middle class housing in South London, Herne Hill was a sleepy rural area.

Some green space has survived in the form of the fantastic local Brockwell Park which is a great park to visit with a lovely cafe often visited by our carers with their clients.  The park has great views over London and is a designated Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC).  The best parts of the large park feature mature trees including ancient oaks, substantial lawn areas set to meadow, and a series of lakes.

Perhaps the most famous location in Herne Hill is the historic velodrome.  Herne Hill Velodrome is one of the oldest cycle tracks in the World dating right back to 1891.  The 450m circuit, with raised banking, has hosted cycle races for many years.  In the 1920s and 1930s crowds of up to 10,000 gathered to watch the World's best race each other.  Many national and world records were set on the track.  The site was used as a gun battery during WW2 and then later in 1948 it was one of the sites used to host the London Olympic Games.  Olympic Gold medallist Bradley Wiggins started his racing carer at Herne Hill aged 12.
