Dedicated carer with her client

"I am very impressed by Right at Home and as a carer, feel very supported by the service they provide. Everything is done to a very high standard - the assessment, personal care, management and the administration. The carer who looks after my husband is cheerful, considerate and sensitive and seems to take pride in her work and being able to do it in a way that makes him feel comfortable."

Penge Local History and Places to Visit

Penge was quiet countryside with few residents before the arrival of the railways in the 1830s. The main features for many years were a large common and a small inn.  The Crooked Billet (pictured below) is said to be by far the oldest public house in Penge. Local historian Peter Abbott states that it was there in 1601, and speculates that it might be much more ancient!

(The Crooked Billet is quite a common name for pubs.  This originates from medieval times, when a law was passed to require all ale house to have sign outside.  Rather than pay to have signs carved and painted, many pub landlords just used crooked billet (tree branch) and hung that up outside.)

In the 1900s Penge developed into a fashionable suburb.  Londoners would visit nearby Crystal Palace during the day and take the tram down the hill to one of the 'twenty-five pubs Penge was reputed to possess as well as the two music halls: The King's Hall and the Empire Theatre.

Fragments of the original Penge Common still survive in Betts ParkSouth Londoner Paul Talling hosts amazing local walks including one for London's lost rivers which features the last remaining part of the Croydon canal, closed in 1836, that once ran from New Cross to Croydon.   The last section can be seen in Betts Park - see picture below.  Paul is married to Right at Home's very own care co-ordinator!

Penge has a lovely fine art gallery called Tension at 135 Maple Road SE20 8LP.  Definitely worth a visit!

The Bridge House Theatre is a tiny fringe venue, described as "a jewel in the cultural life of Penge" puts on high quality small stage plays and events.
