West Dulwich and Gypsy Hill Local History and Places to Visit

West Dulwich dates back to the 17th century when the often flooded land known as Dulwich Common was acquired and drained by Edward Alleyn's estate.  West Dulwich has two main parades of shops, the main one being on the Park Hall road junction and the other on Rosendale Road.

Located near to West Dulwich is the Dulwich College, now over 400 years old and carrying the motto Detur Gloria Soli Deo Let Glory Be Given To God Alone.

Other interesting buildings in West Dulwich and Gypsy Hill are the Grade I listed All Saints Church, home of the Lambeth Orchestra, which burned down in 2000 but reopened on the same site in 2006 thanks to the sustained work of parishioners and the local community. In the Second World War, the crypt at All Saints’ was used as an air-raid shelter. Most services were also held there in the Blitz, for safety and because the crypt’s windows could be easily blacked out.

The large Rosendale pub is a historic coaching house that still retains the original Royal Doulton tiles.

All Saints Church West Dulwich

All Saints’ was started in Croxted Road in 1877 to serve a Dulwich population which was increasing as the railways expanded. It was a “tin tabernacle”, a corrugated-iron building of a type much favoured by Victorians for temporary churches and chapels and could hold 700 people.
