Improve the lives of people living with dementia: Dementia Action Week

This week sees the start of Dementia Action Week, raising awareness of dementia and helping improve the lives of people with dementia, their families, and carers. Receiving a diagnosis can be daunting, however 91% of people living with dementia said they felt better knowing and planning to help improve quality of life, maintaining function and independence, and their safety.

During Dementia Action Week, why not reach out to one of many organisations providing information and engage in fun activities. Whilst there has been progress in understanding dementia and improving support in communities there is still much work to be done in developing our understanding, services, and support for this condition.

Dementia is characterised by a combination of cognitive and functional symptoms, which can be caused not only by neurological conditions but also by the physical, social, and psychological experiences of the individual. However, there is now strong evidence and understanding that while we can support individuals to maintain their current abilities for longer, we can also – in some cases – work to restore lost functions. The latest developments in neuroscience explores how functions can be regained by enabling new links between neurons to work in place of the damaged ones. This phenomenon of rewiring the brain is well understood but has not yet been applied widely to dementia care, where it has huge potential to help people in the early stages of the condition.

Socialising in the right environment with the right people is crucial and we are ready to help you plan to live life to your full potential, to start living with dementia. So why not find out what’s on in your area?

“We have been absolutely thrilled with the care delivered by Right at Home for my 83-year-old mum. She has a heart condition, has suffered two strokes and has dementia. The carers have been brilliant with her, so kind and respectful of her wishes. They treat her with dignity and the communication from staff has been great. We know exactly when they are coming and which carer it will be. I can’t recommend Right at Home strongly enough. They are brilliant.”

“My husband is being supported by Right at Home at the dementia friendship group on alternate Fridays. This group is small and ideal for people struggling with dementia.
They have been kind, considerate and caring and put a lot of thought into activities. My husband loves going to the group.”

 - Review from H C (Wife of Client) published on 18 March 2023

(Overall Experience: 5 out of 5)

“My husband has participated in the dementia friendship group for a number of months now. Immediately from his first session, as soon as he walked through the door, I could tell that he felt at ease and welcome in the 'home from home' atmosphere. The group take part in a range of activities which are inclusive and enjoyable; staff make an effort to include activities that are of a special interest and significance to the attendees. These sessions are of a great benefit to both my husband and myself. I feel reassured that he is spending a happy three hours while I, as his main carer, have the opportunity for respite.”
