What is Home Care?

Home Care, also known as Domiciliary Care, is Quality Care at Home for the elderly and those facing complex Care needs. It can help someone who is ageing and needs assistance living independently, someone recovering from a medical setback, or who has special needs or a disability. Home Care can be short-term or long-term Care in the Home, depending on the person's needs, which can be ever-changing. Short-term Care could entail a week's worth of respite Care or an hour of Care a few times a week. Long-term Care could entail lengthier Care visits more frequently, waking and sleeping nights and 24/7 live-in Care.

Right at Home Solent enables vulnerable people to receive the help they need in the comfort of their Home in Southampton. There are many benefits to receiving Care at Home, including:

  • Staying in comfortable and familiar surroundings;
    • This is particularly important for those living with Alzheimer's or Dementia.
  • Involve your family and loved ones;
    • We offer free training such as Basic Life Support and Moving and Handling for next of kin, friends and unpaid carers. Family and friends can be involved in each step.
  • Only pay for the Care you need;
    • You may only need help for an hour in the morning to get out of bed and dressed, and that would be what you would pay for.
  • Receive support to help you get into the community;
    • Our CareGivers love taking Clients out into the community, to the beach, garden centres, and even swimming!
  • Keep your pets;
    • Receiving Care at Home means you can keep your pets, who are a great source of companionship and purpose.

Right at Home Solent provides different levels of Home Care in Southampton, and we recognise that everyone is different, so we cater our services to the individual. To do this, we offer a free Care assessment to evaluate the person, their Care needs, what they would like from us, and what we can offer.

Dementia Care Southampton

Dementia is caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Dementia is not a disease in its own right, so the symptoms of Dementia vary from person to person. Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of symptoms related to cognitive function. Symptoms of Dementia commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem-solving, language and perception.

There are common misconceptions about the outcomes for someone diagnosed with Dementia. Many people believe that there are limited options for people living with Dementia, and the only choice is inevitably residential Care. Studies have shown that Quality Home Care can have a significant impact on stabilising the most common Dementia symptoms. A healthy diet, suitable exercise and cognitive stimulation have all been shown to positively impact Dementia symptoms. Receiving Care at Home whilst living with Dementia is also beneficial as the capability to stay in familiar surroundings ensures a comfortable environment; changes in living conditions and routines can be unsettling.

Southampton

Southampton has a rich history, and there is much to discover. The now bustling city offers a blend of modern culture and historical value. The Bargate in the centre of the High Street was the main entrance to the medieval walled town circa 1180 AD. It has had many uses, including holding the original City Guildhall, where merchants gathered for hundreds of years; during World War 2, it was used as an air-raid shelter, helping the residents survive the bombings.

In 1920, the Pilgrims chartered the Mayflower to sail to the New World to escape the religious oppression in England. They sailed with another smaller boat, the Speedwell, built in Southampton but abandoned in Plymouth because it leaked so badly.

Since the 1800s, Southampton has been famous for being a port liner. In 1912, the World's most famous liner, The Titanic, embarked from Southampton on its fateful maiden voyage, carrying 700 Southampton residents in her crew, over 500 of whom would never return.

Hundreds of other liners connected the port with the Empire and America, making it Britain's Gateway to the World. The rise of the aeroplane saw much of that trade depart, but now big ships have returned as Cruise Liners, with over 500 visiting every year.

The Mayflower Theatre is a popular destination with residents and tourists; it's the largest theatre on the South Coast, with over 2,300 seats in its auditorium. To celebrate ten years of Right at Home, the Right at Home Head Office granted ten wishes to ten of our Clients all over the UK, and one of those was one of our lovely Clients who lived in the Southampton area. One thing she really wanted to do was go to the theatre, which Right at Home Solent made possible! Her lovely CareGiver Shirley took her to see My Fair Lady, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Other popular attractions in Southampton include their annual Christmas Market in the High Street, Southampton FC, Tudor House and Garden, The Southampton Common and West Quay Shopping Centre.

"My sister and I have been delighted with the care provided by Right at Home. Our elderly mother has Alzheimer’s disease and we needed additional help for the past eighteen months to enable her to remain at home. We were allocated a team of three caregivers meaning that the care provided was consistent and Mum got to know them well. All three caregivers were patient and kind to Mum and provided an excellent level of care. The management team are supportive and helpful. They communicate well and are organised. We would thoroughly recommend Right at Home to anyone looking for care for their loved one."

How Can Right at Home Solent Help in Southampton?

Right at Home Solent has wonderful and highly-trained CareGivers across Southampton who provide Care at Home bespoke to you or your loved one.

  • Visits aren't rushed; our preferred visit time is one hour. Unlike other Care companies that provide 15-minute Care calls, we provide a minimum of an hour; we found that in order to provide Outstanding Home Care, 15 minutes is not enough.
  • Our CareGivers are carefully matched to our Clients based on their interests and personality. All our CareGivers are introduced to Clients in a Shadowing visit before they begin delivering Care.
  • We have a professional dress code but do not wear a uniform, as we recognise that some of our Clients would prefer discreet service when we accompany them out in Southampton.
  • We are quick to react, vigilant in our duty of Care and always aim to leave our Care Calls by leaving a smile on our Clients' faces!

All our CareGivers in Southampton are background checked and have to go through our induction process. They also all go through our very rigorous recruitment and interview process. They are fully supported by us and are fully insured. We also take Care when matching our Clients up with CareGivers; we understand how important it is to have a CareGiver you get on with. We will match you to a CareGiver with whom you share similar interests to make your Care plan fully personalised.

We can support you and your loved ones across Southampton. If you are looking for Home Care for you or a loved one, contact our friendly team in Southampton on 02380 170205 and get our help planning top-quality support customised for your personal preferences.
