Homecare lessons from lockdown: you can’t beat home-cooked

In the heart of lockdown, even takeaways were hard to come by. Luckily, it takes more than a closed chip shop to stop our dedicated carers.

Catherine dropped into one of her regular homecare clients. She turned the key in the lock and walked in with a pleasant “Hello, it’s Catherine from Right at Home Solent!”.

Harold was 91 years old. A bright old gentleman who suffers from dementia. He’d just got back from hospital after a fall and was still not quite himself.

Harold gets meals delivered via a local service. Catherine helps him through the menu and places the order. Today, as Catherine brought up the subject of dinner, Harold was quick to jump in.

“Fish and chips” he said, “Mmm yes I’ll have fish and chips”

As Catherine scanned the menu, there was no fish and chips. And the local takeaways were all currently closed. She looked at Harold, knowing he’d had a tough time, and the disruption of the virus rules only made things more confusing.

“Ok”, she said, “fish and chips” it is.

On her way home, Catherine went via the shops. She picked up potatoes, she got fish, and she bought everything else she needed to cook his meal.

Later, she delivered the home-cooked takeaway to Harold and sat with him whilst he ate. She watched him devour every last mouthful, and sat there proud – he’d even eaten his peas.

It’s the little things that can make a difference

In these uncertain times, we realise the importance of a little familiarity – maybe even a little treat. And sometimes that means going above and beyond.

We are more than just carers for a lot of our clients, we are their family, and that’s how we try to treat them.

Do you have a loved one who could do with some more support? We’d love to go the extra mile for them.

What’s more, we can even offer a live-in carer if you’re worried about social distancing. That can mean caring for two people for the price of one. Want to know more? Get in touch.
