An Alternative to Residential Care
Choosing the right care for yourself or a family member can be a daunting prospect, especially when you are looking at 24-hour a day assistance. It’s important to know your options and to consider the pros and cons of each. Broadly, the options are residential care or live-in care.
So, what is live-in care?
Well, it’s exactly that – you invite a carer to live in your own home to help you maintain your independence. The live-in carer is on hand when you need them. They can assist with household tasks, such as cleaning and cooking your meals. Live-in carers will support you with personal care, getting dressed and mobility support where it is needed. A live-in carer can also help you get out and about in the community and provide that all important companionship.
What are the Pros ?
There are many advantages with choosing live-in care. Having the option to remain at home, with family, friends and social activities nearby is, for most people, preferable to moving into a residential care home. Staying at home means you avoid the upheaval of moving. No matter what age you are, moving to a new home is stressful. You benefit from a bespoke care plan. This means your wants and needs can be met more easily, whereas in residential care you’d have to fit in with other people’s rules. You can keep any pets you have and you’ll be able to maintain your routines. Live-in care can also be cost effective for a couple as you would be paying double in residential care, whereas the incremental costs of supporting two people with live-in care is usually less.
What are the Cons ?
Live-in care is not for everybody. Your live-in carer will need their own room and some time off on a regular basis. As with many care options, it can be expensive, especially if you need separate carers to call in when your live-in carer takes a break. You may not like the idea of someone new living in your home either – although in most cases a strong bond develops between the live-in carer and the person they are looking after.
