What does good quality of life look like?

We understand that everyone measures quality of life differently. Beyond creating personalised care plans for every Client, we’re keen to support every member of our Wimbledon community to improve their quality of life. You can apply our advice either on your own or with the help of a local Right at Home CareGiver based in the Wimbledon area. The definition of a good quality of life is subjective, it can change from person to person depending on your circumstances.

However, there are some common factors that impact all of us in one way or another.

What affects quality of life in Wimbledon.

Excluding societal factors such as education or access to healthcare, these are a list of some of the factors that impact our clients’ quality of life.

1) Physical and mental health

As we get older, our physical and mental activity becomes even more important. These activities play a crucial role in helping adults stay independent and healthy as they begin to age.

Ideally, adults over the age of 65 should aim for at least 10 minutes or more of physical activities each day. This should average to at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. At Right at Home Wimbledon, we recognise the importance of keeping adults active, healthy and happy. We can even support with physical exercises such strengthening to aid in recovery after hip injuries. This is carefully planned to support elderly Clients with gaining strength and improving flexibility.

Any mental activities will increase and stimulate the connections between the cells of their brain and will help elderly people to retain their mental capacity for much longer. These are few suggestions of activities that often stimulate our clients mental health: gardening , crafts projects, playing an instrument, baking , playing computer games , learning a new language , engage in a meaningful conversation.

  • A.K. is one of our clients that requires physical exercises as recovering after a hip injury. She was given a home exercise program to aid her recovery such as movement and stretching exercises. Her caregivers play a huge role in encouraging her to perform these exercises.

2) Social life

Socialising will help our elderly people feel like they have a place where they belong. It will allow them to connect and build new relationships with other people.

  • M.A enjoys her park trips with our caregivers that would lessen her anxiety and loneliness. MA lives alone and enjoys social life. While she occasionally watches television with her caregivers at home, Maureen also has a very good relationship with her neighbours and loves the opportunity to go out and see some of them in the neighbourhood. Her dog, Gemma also loves being outdoors.

3) Access to hobbies

By having access to hobbies can help stimulate older people’s brains to improve their mental health and memory skills. They will be able to concentrate better and there will be an improvement in their coordination and motor skills.

  • B is a client that loves jigsaw puzzles as this is something that maintains her focus on what’s going on. Her caregivers love to sit with her and solve them as it enhances their communication and uplifts her mood as she sometimes has impulsive behaviour. Having the ability to solve a jigsaw puzzle will actively stimulate their mind by reducing anxiety and lowering blood pressure levels.

4) Financial security

M.A, M.C and A.S are some of our clients that we protect from financial abuse by keeping their financial documents safe. In addition, their cash is kept locked away in a financial cash box and all expenditures are well documented.
