Tring Local History and Places to Visit

Tring is a small market town lying beneath the Chiltern Hills in the county of Hertfordshire in England.
The existence of the town goes back to prehistoric times. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book and received its market charter in 1315.

The ancient trading routes, the Icknield Way and Akeman Street cross in Tring. The town’s old streets and buildings have changed little over the centuries, maintaining its close link with its intriguing past.

'Tring' was Tredung and Treunge in the Domesday book (1086) and later Medieval spellings include Triungla, Treunga, Triangre, Trehangre, Treinge, Treinges, Treynge, Trenge, Treng, Traynge, Trahing, Trieng, ...

Tring Local History Museum

Visit Tring Museum to find out about the history of the town, the area, and many fascinating people associated with it. It is entirely dependent on and run by volunteers, and is open on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Museum is committed to delivering proactive events centred round the history of Tring. These events take place either in the Museum itself or just outside in the Market Place area:
  • Guided Town History Walks are organised from time to time meeting and ending at the museum. Walks last about 2 hours.
  • Live and interactive demonstration of the craft of Straw Plaiting
  • The Chiltern Group craft event featuring demonstrations of bygone local crafts

The museum is step-free.  The entrance has a gentle ramp and the galleries are on one level, fully accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter.  Text panels use large, clear print.  Magnifiers are available and there is a folder with object captions in large print.  At present there is no audio guide but stewards will be happy to explain anything.
