The Five Stages of Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s is a degenerative condition, which becomes increasingly life-limiting over time. Early signs of the disease can be easily ignored if you do not know what they are:

Stage One – three key early symptoms of Parkinson’s are shaking, slow movement and stiff, inflexible muscles. These occur on one side of the body only.

Stage Two – symptoms worsen and start to affect both sides of the body. It may be difficult to walk and sit or stand up straight.

Stage Three – loss of balance may result in falls. Slowness of movement affects everyday activities such as eating and getting dressed.

Stage Four – symptoms are severe and affect ability to walk unaided. It is no longer possible to live alone independently.

Stage Five – extreme stiffness in the legs means that the person can no longer stand or walk and requires a wheelchair or is bedridden. Hallucinations and delusions may accompany the motor symptoms. This stage of Parkinson’s requires Live-in or 24-hour care.
