MI's Story

How Live In Care Services have helped Mike.

MI is a distinguished centenarian, having led a rich and eventful life. His journey commenced with service in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the War, where his passion for flying took flight. Even after his RAF tenure, MI continued to soar through the skies, relishing multiple flights until his 90th birthday. Transitioning from the RAF, MI pursued a career as a Scientific Civil Servant and later contributed his expertise to Surrey University. Renowned for his intelligence and vast knowledge, conversing with MI is always a delight.

Despite his remarkable life, MI now finds himself in a phase of elderliness and frailty. In 2019, he was diagnosed with Bullous Pemphigoid, a rare and painful skin condition, and subsequently received a pacemaker due to heart failure. Recognising his increasing vulnerability, MI and his son opted for Live-in Care since 2019, ensuring his safety and well-being round the clock. Over the years, MI has developed strong bonds with his two long-term Live-in Carers.

Challenges and Interventions:

Adapting seamlessly to the presence of Live-in Carers, MI relishes their companionship and the opportunity to engage in activities he enjoys. However, at 100 years old, MI displays a reluctance to rise early in the morning. Through mutual understanding, an agreement was reached wherein MI awakened for breakfast and medication before returning to bed until mid-morning.

Transition to Live-in Care:

The transition to Live-in Care in December 2019 proved pivotal for MI's well-being. Following a series of falls and observed changes in his condition, MI and his son, in consultation with caregivers, concluded that Live-in Care was imperative. This decision has not only mitigated the frequency of falls but also provides essential support for managing MI's cardiac issues and ensuring proper nutrition and hydration.

Positive Outcome and Continued Engagement:

Since embracing Live-in Care, MI's quality of life has flourished. With the assistance of his electric scooter, he relishes weekly outings, fostering a sense of independence. Additionally, MI enjoys social gatherings with friends and family, indulging in lunches and maintaining his youthful spirit. While some days pose challenges, particularly when fatigue sets in, MI's resilience shines through, exemplified by his remarkable achievement of reaching the century milestone.

Conclusion:

The case of MI underscores the significance of person-centred care, emphasising the importance of adapting interventions to meet individual needs. By fostering trust, establishing meaningful connections, and maintaining open communication among clients, family members, and caregivers, MI's journey exemplifies the transformative impact of personalised care. The provision of Live-in Care offers MI's family peace of mind, ensuring his ongoing well-being and security.
