A Crisis in Care?

Recently, it seems that fewer and fewer people are choosing a career in Care. According to a recent survey by the UK Home Care Association, over half of the 140 Home Care providers asked claimed that recruitment is proving harder than it has ever been.

The Coronavirus pandemic saw a newfound and widespread appreciation for the key workers within Health and Social Care. However, this appreciation has seemingly not translated into a rise in recruitment, as these issues have been seen across the entire home care sector, with some positions remaining unfilled for months on end.

Some associate these recruitment difficulties with an ongoing poor image of care work. Many still consider the industry to be unskilled, low paid and an invalid career path with little opportunity for progression.

We are keen to disprove these harmful stereotypes of care work. To do so, we're launching a new recruitment campaign called 'Now I'm a Care Giver'. This campaign, alongside our existing, franchise-wide 'Proud of my Profession campaign, aims to highlight the rewarding opportunities hat are available within the Care profession. We're using real examples of our very own Care Givers here at Right at Home Stevenage, Letchworth and Hitchin, who made the transition into Care from different industries.

Careers in Care: A Case Study

While some of our Care Givers have always worked in Care, almost all our team made the transition from a completely different industry. We pride ourselves on our ethos of person-centred care and family-feel to our team of carers.

For Chloe, she decided to make a change and begin her career in Care after working as an assistant manager for a bakery. Chloe wanted to make a difference and give back to the community, as she felt she "could only do so much from behind the counter".

She had never worked in Care before, but through seeing her regular customers come into the bakery and knowing it was often their only trip out, she knew that she wanted to make a career change into care.

With the full training that we provided, Chloe was soon able to get out and help others as she wanted. Right at Home Stevenage, Letchworth and Hitchin has helped to kickstart Chloe's career in Care, and we've thoroughly enjoyed seeing her blossom in her new role. She is a firm favourite with our clients and has recently won our Going the Extra Mile 'GEM' award due to all her hard work.

Chloe's success in her new role, coming from a completely different professional background, shows that working in Care really can be for anyone at anytime.
